Ryanair has issued a warning to passengers regarding smart bags, which feature built-in batteries and USB charging ports. The budget airline has clarified that these bags cannot be checked into the hold unless the lithium battery is removed beforehand.
According to Ryanair's website, smart bags may be accepted as hold luggage only if the battery is taken out before checking in at the bag-drop desk or gate. The removed battery must be carried in the cabin, placed under the seat or on the person, and not stored in overhead lockers. Bags with non-removable batteries are not permitted as checked baggage at all.
The airline also enforces a 100Wh maximum for batteries carried in the cabin, so passengers should check their battery capacity before flying. This policy aligns with safety regulations regarding lithium batteries in aircraft holds.
In addition, Ryanair recently increased the size allowance for free under-seat bags to 40x30x20cm, a 20% increase from the previous 40x25x20cm. These bags have no weight restrictions, though they must be light enough for passengers to handle.
From 10 November, Ryanair will also close airport check-in and bag drops 60 minutes before scheduled departure, up from the current 40 minutes. This change aims to give passengers more time to clear security and reach their gates, especially during busy periods.
