A 23-year-old Russian man has died after being attacked by a shark off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, on Thursday. The victim, identified by Russian media as Vladimir Popov, was heard screaming 'papa' as the predator dragged him underwater. His girlfriend managed to escape the attack.
Tourists on the shore watched in horror as the shark circled the man before striking. Video footage shows the man desperately trying to swim to safety as onlookers shouted warnings. The shark returned for a second attack, pulling the man beneath the surface. Witnesses reported seeing the shark feeding on the remains.
The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of a citizen from a shark attack. Popov had been staying in Egypt with his father, who witnessed the fatal incident. Authorities have urged Russian tourists to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions from hotel staff.
This is not the first fatal shark attack in the area. In July 2022, Austrian tourist Elisabeth Sauer, 68, was killed by a shark in Hurghada. A Romanian woman also died in a similar attack on the same day.
