Pitlochry named one of Scotland's best autumn places to visit

Pitlochry, a Victorian town surrounded by pine forests and countryside views in Perthshire, has been named one of the best places in Scotland for autumn. The town has been tipped by travel insiders as a must-visit, particularly in October, for those looking to enjoy crisp fresh air and autumnal colours.

Enchanted Forest and local attractions

Pitlochry is already a firm favourite thanks to its Enchanted Forest light trail through Faskally Wood, where visitors can spend around an hour walking around the woodlands and taking in the various impressive light installations before the Christmas season starts. This year, Pitlochry also hosts the 25th anniversary of The Enchanted Forest, an annual sound and light show held in nearby Faskally Wood every autumn.

The high street boasts a number of independent shops and pubs that can be the ideal place for an afternoon, while the surrounding countryside is full of hiking and cycling trails for those who like to stay active on a weekend break. Red squirrels that call the region home and rivers with leaping salmon add to the appeal for hikers and ramblers.

Queen's View and expert recommendation

One particular highlight not to be missed is the Queen's View, which overlooks Loch Tummel and can be reached by foot with a variety of trails catering to different fitness levels. Named after Queen Victoria, this spot offers unrivalled views, and there's a visitor centre and cafe where visitors can replenish their energy and learn more about the region.

The beautiful scenery is part of the reason why Hazel Rickett, CEO at small-group tour operator Rabbie's, named it one of her top picks of the UK's best autumn destinations. Rickett explained: "Set among the wooded hills of Highland Perthshire, Pitlochry is one of the best places in Scotland to see autumn colour. Perthshire is known as 'Big Tree Country', and in October its forests turn shades of orange, red and gold, creating beautiful surroundings for riverside walks and scenic drives."

She added: "Visitors can explore the Victorian town's independent shops and cafes or take a walk through the surrounding woodland. This year, Pitlochry also hosts the 25th anniversary of The Enchanted Forest, an annual sound and light show held in nearby Faskally Wood every autumn, making it a perfect destination for enjoying the season in the Highlands."

Other Scottish picks

Pitlochry wasn't the only Scottish location to have made the top six list. Edinburgh also impressed thanks to its cobbled lanes, easy access to countryside walks, and the plethora of bars, shops and attractions that make the city a hit with tourists from all over the world.
