Perfect Canary Islands Cruise Tips: How I Made It So Good
Perfect Canary Islands Cruise Tips: How I Made It So Good

It has been almost 25 years since I first experienced a cruise, and that was before children and work intensified the pace of life at home. I was determined that my return to the seas would focus on relaxation: lounging on deck, soaking up the sun, and sipping cocktails during a child-free week.

My friend Paul, a complete cruise novice, and I chose a week aboard P&O Cruises' ship Azura, sailing around the Canary Islands and Madeira. The prospect of escaping the dark, dismal weather of Northern England for winter sunshine drew us in. The cruise began in Tenerife, visiting Madeira, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote before returning to Tenerife.

As the departure date approached, we realised that exploring the volcanic islands and colourful towns would be as important as relaxing. A little planning goes a long way on a cruise. Here are five things I recommend doing when sailing around the Canary Islands and Madeira.

1. Visit Timanfaya National Park

We took a bus tour through the park, absorbing the dramatic landscape formed from molten lava rock. We ascended winding roads through lava fields to a visitor centre, where we held samples of red-hot rock, witnessed steam geysers shooting into the air, and saw the BBQ area where chickens are roasted.

2. Relax in the Spa on a Sea Day

The gym on Azura is fully equipped with cardio machines and weights. After a quick workout, a private adults-only pool offers a leisurely dip. Indoors, the spa features several treatment areas, a steam room, and a sauna. I opted for a deep tissue massage, which was very therapeutic. The spa also has a relaxation room and an exclusive upper area with sun loungers and seating, perfect for unwinding after island exploration.

3. Explore Madeira's Jeep Adventure

In Funchal, Madeira, we joined a jeep adventure that took us through rugged terrain and offered stunning views of the island's lush landscapes. It was an exhilarating way to see the island's natural beauty.

4. Make Poncha in Madeira

We also had the chance to make Poncha, a traditional Madeiran alcoholic drink, during a local experience. It was a fun and interactive way to learn about the island's culture.

5. Book the Holiday

Prices for the Spain, Portugal & Canary Islands cruise (N617) start from £1,299 per person for a 14-night roundtrip from Southampton on 18 July onboard Ventura, based on two sharing an inside cabin. Book at pocruises.com.

This cruise offered the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, and these tips can help you make the most of your own Canary Islands adventure.
