Paros, a pear-shaped island in the Aegean Sea, offers a serene alternative to overcrowded Greek hotspots like Mykonos. With its iconic white-and-blue architecture, pristine beaches, and laid-back atmosphere, this island paradise remains a hidden gem for travelers seeking tranquility.
Why Paros Stands Out
Unlike popular destinations that become overrun with tourists, Paros provides a relaxing escape without the sky-high prices. The main port town of Parikia greets visitors with gorgeous beaches, a market square lined with tavernas and bars, and narrow streets adorned with bougainvillaea. Boutique shops and sleepy cats wandering the alleys add to its charm.
Beaches and Natural Beauty
One of the island's most stunning beaches is Kolymbithres, known for its large, clay rock formations that frame the bright blue, calm ocean. Visitors can hire sunbeds or simply use the rocks as natural loungers. The beach features small coves for one or two people, as well as larger recesses that can accommodate dozens. Behind the bay, bars and taverns offer drinks and snacks, but travelers are urged to take their rubbish away to preserve the pristine environment.
Exploring Paros and Beyond
The island is perfect for island hopping, with its quieter sister island Antiparos just minutes away by boat. In the village of Naoussa, the town buzzes with life, offering freshly caught seafood and access to some of the island's best beaches. Visitors can hire a car, scooter, or buggy to explore the entire island.
According to travel journalist Vita Molyneux, who visited Paros a few years ago, the island absolutely blew her mind. She described the crystal-clear beaches as looking like they've been plucked straight from another planet, with charm in every corner of the cobbled streets.
