Paros Offers a Peaceful Alternative to Overcrowded Greek Islands
Summer is here, and with it comes the challenge of choosing a holiday destination that offers beauty without the crowds. While popular spots like Mykonos and Barcelona can become overcrowded and expensive, there are hidden gems that provide the same allure without the hassle. One such paradise is Paros, a pear-shaped island in the Aegean Sea, just a few hours by ferry from Athens.
According to travel writer Vita Molyneux, who visited the island a few years ago, Paros absolutely blew her mind. It features the iconic bright blue and shining white buildings, along with crystal clear beaches that look like they belong on another planet.
Exploring Parikia and Naoussa
Upon arriving at the main port of Parikia, visitors are greeted by gorgeous beaches and a market square lined with tavernas and bars. Bougainvillaea grows across the narrow streets, and boutique shops await exploration. Sleepy cats wander the alleys, adding to the island's charm. For day trips, travelers can hire a car, scooter, or even a buggy to reach the other village of Naoussa.
In Naoussa, the town buzzes with life, offering some of the freshest seafood. It is also home to one of the island's most stunning beaches, Kolymbithres, which features large, clay rock formations that line the bright blue, calm ocean.
Kolymbithres Beach: A Must-See
Kolymbithres beach is a must-see, with its alien-like rock formations providing natural sunbeds. Some sections are small enough for one or two people, while larger recesses can fit dozens. It is a fabulous place to spend the day, dipping in and out of the water and sunning oneself on the white-washed cliffs. Behind the bay, there are bars and taverns where visitors can buy drinks and snacks, but it is important to take all rubbish away to preserve the bay's beauty.
