Opened in 1861, Alexandra Park was created in response to the Lancashire Cotton Famine, with the aim of occupying and employing the many local textile workers affected. Named to commemorate Edward VII’s marriage to Alexandra of Denmark, it is also the second park of the same name in the city-region.
Victorian Landmarks and Listed Structures
Several structures within the park are Grade II-listed due to their historical significance. Among the notable landmarks are the Lion’s Den, a public shelter recreated based on its original 1865 design, and the Victorian conservatory, first built in 1907. Statues in the park honour Oldham historical figures Joseph Platt and Robert Ashcroft.
A Lake, a Cafe, and Family Fun
The park’s boating lake, first constructed in 1903, offers scenic views and a chance to catch wildlife and waterfowl in action. While boat rental is no longer available, it serves today as a peaceful stopping-off point. Overlooking the water is the boathouse cafe, housed in a red-brick and timber-framed building and open daily. Run by Pure Coffee, its menu includes sandwiches, cakes, hot drinks, and seasonal and daily specials, along with local ice cream from Grandpa Greene’s.
For children, there is a popular play area near the conservatory, with sand pits, climbing frames and, quite unusually, a paddling pool. The park also has seven free-to-use tennis courts and three crown green bowling greens for those seeking an active day out.
Woodland Walks and Practical Information
Walkers have plenty of trails to explore across the 57-acre site. The 'green' walk, which takes around 18 minutes, starts from the car park and takes in views of the 1899-built observation, the gardens and the play area, before passing the bowling greens, the duck pond and the boating lake and circling back. The longer 'blue' walk, taking just over half an hour, includes the promenade, Donnelly's Hollow and the Lion’s Den shelter, with signs leading the way along an accessible pathway.

The nearest Metrolink station is Oldham Mumps, around a 29-minute walk away, while buses from Oldham town centre stop on Glodwick Road, Abbey Hills Road, or Park Road, all within a short distance.
