North Berwick in East Lothian has been named the best seaside town in Scotland for a car-free family day out, according to a new UK-wide roundup. The coastal destination was the only Scottish location to feature in the list, earning an overall rating of 70 out of 100.
Praise for water quality and family facilities
On Thursday, August 20, family holiday specialists Lapland Famille shared a list of the top 10 beaches across Britain, assigning each one a score out of 100 based on factors such as water quality and walking distance. North Berwick was praised for its clean water and family facilities.
The town is situated around 20 miles from Edinburgh and is renowned for its beaches, with West Beach in particular being a popular day trip destination. The bay features a long stretch of sand offering space for sunbathing, paddling, and picnics.
West Beach and local attractions
West Beach is a designated bathing water site and offers views out to the islands of Craigleith and the Bass Rock. The Scottish Seabird Centre is also a short walk away, while there is a putting green behind the beach open during the summer months.
According to Lapland Famille, North Berwick earned its place on the list because of its water quality, its "accessible town toilets" at the harbour and nearby Quality Street, its "beach wheelchair provision", and its family facilities.
Getting there without a car
ScotRail operates a regular service between Edinburgh and North Berwick. From the train station, it takes around 10 minutes to reach West Beach on foot. East Coast Buses also runs a bus service between the two locations.
Whitby in Yorkshire took the top spot on the overall list with a score of 90, praised for its practical facilities and flat promenade and ramp access. The roundup was compiled by analysing the latest complete bathing-water classifications for Scotland, England, and Wales, matched with published station-to-beach routes and facility information.
Managing Director at Lapland Famille Alex Dyer commented: "Parents should treat the walk from the station as part of the day, not an afterthought. A ten-minute route on a map can feel much longer with a buggy, beach bags and a child who has run out of energy, so check the surface, gradients, toilets and the return train before setting off."
The full list of the 10 British seaside towns best for a car-free family day out includes Whitby, Barry Island, Margate, Newquay, Tenby, Weymouth, Cleethorpes, Brighton, North Berwick, and Dawlish.
