Time Out has unveiled its highly anticipated list of the world's 25 best cities for 2026, with Melbourne, Australia, securing the coveted top position. The ranking, which is based on comprehensive surveys of over 24,000 city residents and insights from more than 100 Time Out writers globally, highlights urban centres celebrated for their vibrant culture, culinary excellence, and community spirit.
Melbourne Claims the Crown
Melbourne's ascent to number one is attributed to its compelling culinary landscape, neighbourhoods buzzing with independent cinemas, rooftop bars, and colourful mural-lined laneways, alongside a robust sports calendar featuring events like the Australian Open and Formula 1 Grand Prix. Survey data underscores this acclaim, with 94% of locals praising the food scene and 92% endorsing its arts and culture. The city's appeal to younger generations also played a role, ranking it third-best globally for Gen Z.
UK Cities Shine in Top Five
The United Kingdom made a strong showing with two entries in the top five. Edinburgh claimed the bronze medal, praised for blending historic grandeur with modern vibrancy. Time Out highlighted its cherry-blossom parks, medieval cobbled alleyways, and distinctive areas like Stockbridge and Leith for exploration.
London followed closely in fourth place, described as overflowing with culture, cuisine, and character. The city's free museums, world-class restaurants, and upcoming attractions such as the Museum of London in Smithfield contributed to its high ranking. Survey results revealed overwhelming local approval, with 99% applauding arts and culture, 96% praising the food scene, and 94% valuing green spaces.
New York's Cultural Dominance
New York City rounded out the top five, though it dropped from third place in 2025. Dubbed a "cultural behemoth," it blends historic and hyped elements with swagger, from pizza slices to public art. Enhancements like tappable subway fares, faster Amtrak trains, and JFK Airport's new international terminal added to its appeal. In the survey, 93% of New Yorkers gave top marks to arts and culture, 91% endorsed the food scene, and 78% called it the world's most exciting city.
Global Highlights and Notable Absences
Shanghai secured second place, noted for its specialty cafés, inventive cocktail bars, and cutting-edge architecture. The rest of the top ten included Cape Town (sixth), Mexico City (seventh), Bangkok (eighth), Seoul (ninth), and Tokyo (tenth).
Notably, some cities from previous years were absent, including New Orleans, which ranked sixth in 2025, and Seville, Spain, which was 18th last year. Grace Beard, Travel Editor at Time Out, described the list as a celebration of the fun, culture, and community defining urban life.
