Melbourne has been crowned the world's best city for 2026 in Time Out's annual ranking, marking the first time an Australian city has topped the list in its 10-year history. The city, previously ranked second in 2016 and fourth in 2025, was praised for its food, culture and arts scenes. Sydney placed 21st and Adelaide 29th.
The ranking is based on a survey of about 24,000 people, who were asked about 44 criteria including food, nightlife, culture, affordability, happiness and 'overall city vibe'. Participants were self-selected, likely Time Out readers, and came from 42 language backgrounds. A panel of about 100 Time Out city experts also contributed.
Melbourne scored particularly highly on local responses to statements such as 'my city makes me happy' and 'I find joy in the everyday experiences where I live'. Some 94% of Melburnians rated their food scene highly, 92% praised its arts and culture, and it was ranked third best for catering to Gen Z.
However, the methodology has been questioned. With a sample size potentially as small as 0.008% of Melbourne's population, the ranking may reflect 'vibes' more than hard data. Other indices, such as the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index, placed Melbourne sixth, while The Economist's most liveable cities list ranked it fourth.
Time Out's Asia Pacific managing director, Kaylie Smith, said she was 'thrilled' that Melbourne had 'outshone the world's biggest urban centres', adding that it was 'inspiring to see locals themselves backing where they live'.
