Melbourne's Caretaker's Cottage has been named the Best Bar in Australasia for the second consecutive year, securing the 19th spot globally in the World's 50 Best Bars list. The awards were announced at a ceremony in Hong Kong on 8 October, with a panel of 800 experts casting votes.
Since opening in 2022, the venue—described as 'probably Victoria's smallest pub'—has become a must-visit destination. Owners Matt Stirling, Ryan Nordics and Rob Libecans said they were 'blown away' by the recognition. The bar's signature martini, served bracingly cold from the freezer, was cited as a key factor in its top-20 ranking, climbing two places from the previous year.
Sydney's Maybe Sammy placed 42nd globally, having previously held the Australasia title for four consecutive years from 2019 to 2022. Founder Stefano Catino expressed pride in putting 'Sydney on the global cocktail map', noting the venue is now more profitable than when it first gained recognition.
Melbourne's Byrdi dropped to 91st in the extended list, down from 35th in 2024. New Sydney bar Tigra and Disco Pantera won Best Bar Design for its 1970s aesthetic and use of reclaimed materials, including timber cutoffs and a salvaged sound system.
The awards are judged by a confidential panel of bartenders and drinks writers to prevent lobbying, with 29 academy chairs ensuring regional representation. Hong Kong's Bar Leone topped the global list, followed by Mexico City's Handshake Speakeasy and Barcelona's Sips.
