Matlock Bath: inland seaside village with 10 chippies

Matlock Bath, a village in the Derbyshire Peak District, has become a popular day trip destination for families across the Midlands by recreating a seaside atmosphere inland. The settlement, which has attracted visitors since the 17th century, was nicknamed 'little Switzerland' by Lord Byron because of its dramatic hillsides and sweeping views.

A Coastal Feel Without the Coast

Today the village evokes the feeling of being beside the sea, packed with fish and chip shops, confectionery stores, ice cream vendors and amusement arcades. It offers all the hallmarks of a traditional seaside resort without the wind and sand, instead providing green landscapes, the River Derwent and numerous walking routes.

For family trips, the area includes both educational and leisure attractions. The Matlock Bath Aquarium and the Peak District Mining Museum are within easy reach for visitors wanting a break from the village's sweet shops.

Riverside Walks and Rowing Boats

The celebrated Lovers Walk is recommended for a peaceful addition to any visit. This riverside path offers views of cliff-edge properties, colourful flower displays and a park suited to a relaxing break. When conditions allow, visitors can also rent a rowing boat to explore Matlock Bath from the water.

What truly sets the village apart is its food offering, particularly its fish and chip shops, all located along a single street. With as many as 10 places serving the dish, visitors are spoiled for choice, although one appears to be the clear favourite.

The Top-Rated Chippy

According to TripAdvisor, Tucker Fish and Chips is the highest-rated chippy in Matlock Bath, with an overall review score of 4.5. One review reads: "We go to Whitby every year, and as anyone will tell you, it can't be beaten for fish and chips. Well, hold up. Because this little place is on par with the best fish and chips I've ever had. Staff are amazing, the food is absolutely fantastic with melt-in-your-mouth batter, and the curry sauce is top-notch. If you're in Matlock, make sure this is your first choice for fish and chips because you won't be disappointed."

Other chippies in the area include Kostas Fish Bar, Route 66 Promenade Fish Bar and Taste of The Waves. Between these are numerous sweet shops selling traditional British confectionery, ice creams and other desserts.

Arcades and Nearby Attractions

Along the promenade, the Derwent Amusement Centre houses all the village's arcade entertainment, from two-penny machines to air hockey, claw machines and an adults-only gambling area. Children could spend hours there regardless of the weather.

Located a mile and a half south of the larger town of Matlock, Matlock Bath offers an escape that remains close to the pubs and high-street shops of its neighbour. Many visitors opt for a pub crawl from Matlock down to Matlock Bath, taking the train between the two destinations.
