More than 150 holidaymakers were evacuated from the Rey Don Jaime hotel on the Spanish island of Mallorca after a section of a dining room floor collapsed, resulting in several minor injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 PM local time in the popular tourist resort of Santa Ponça, prompting a rapid emergency response.
Emergency Services Rush to Scene
Firefighters from the Calvià station, along with ambulances, Local Police patrols, and Civil Guard agents, swiftly arrived at the hotel to assist potential victims. Health workers treated multiple individuals for minor injuries, while authorities evacuated around 150 people as a precautionary measure to ensure safety.
Investigation into Collapse Causes
Civil Guard investigators are examining the cause of the collapse, with one leading hypothesis suggesting that the floor slab may have sunk due to age-related structural weaknesses. Preliminary reports indicate that the slab might not have been reinforced with adequate mesh, contributing to the failure. Photos from Spanish media show the dining room with collapsed floor slabs, scattered tables and chairs, and debris covering the area.
The hotel, located at number 4 Gran Vía Puig Major street, is now under scrutiny as officials work to determine the exact reasons behind the incident. No serious injuries have been reported, but the event has raised concerns about building safety in tourist destinations.
