Ludlow, a historic market town in the West Midlands, has been recognised as one of Britain's best high streets, featuring a 900-year-old market and over 100 independent businesses with no chain stores or closures. The Guardian named it among the top 10 'best independent high streets' in the country, describing it as 'full of cool independents rather than the usual chains'.
A Town of Historic Charm and Independent Shops
Ludlow's high street is a blend of medieval, Tudor, and Georgian architecture, offering a unique shopping experience. The town's market, which has been trading for over 900 years, sits at the heart of the town square and features a variety of stalls, from flea markets to artisan crafts. Monthly specialist events include the Food and Craft Market, the Local to Ludlow Producers' Market, and an Antique Market.
Key independent businesses include the Mousetrap Cheese Shop, Harp Lane Deli, the Chocolate Gourmet, and Bodenhams, a clothing store in a 600-year-old building. Other family-run shops like Bensons (jewellery) and Florabunda (florist) offer unique gifts. The Ludlow Farmshop sells locally sourced meats, cheeses, and baked goods.
Community and Business Strength
Jodie Deakin, owner of Eclectica and chair of Ludlow Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said: 'We are over 100 businesses strong and have everything from retail businesses like mine to professional services like solicitors.' The chamber's membership costs £50 a year. Deakin noted that the market stalls are permanent and owned by the town council, which runs the market most days and leases it for events like the Ludlow Local Produce Market, where vendors must produce everything within a 30-mile radius.
Manager Tish Dockerty of the Ludlow Local Produce Market added: 'Everything that's sold is either made by the person on the stall or the person that's selling it, so they can tell you how it's made.'
Attractions Beyond Shopping
Ludlow Castle, an 11th-century Norman ruin, offers breathtaking views of the countryside. Visitors can also stroll along the River Teme to admire the medieval Ludford Bridge. Nearby Mortimer Forest provides miles of scenic walks, including the climb to High Vinnalls, the forest's highest point.
Ludlow combines historic streets, independent shops, local cuisine, and countryside, making it an ideal destination for a summer staycation.
