Regulars at one of Newcastle's best-known pubs are in for a shock when they return this week. The Hancock, on the outskirts of the city centre, has reopened after a major refurbishment that has left it 'almost unrecognisable' inside and out.
As ChronicleLive reported earlier this year, the pub had announced plans to close for a few weeks, promising to 'take things next level' with more TVs than ever for live sport, a completely renovated beer garden, new first-floor booths with their own TVs, and a fresh look with all-new signage and interiors.
New look inside and out
The team has delivered on those promises. Since closing on July 13, the main bar area has been transformed with new flooring, new lighting and a new overall design. The beer garden now looks 'very chic', while the upper floor booths are ideal for booking out to watch footy or NFL with friends.
There are also nods to Geordie culture, with artwork including a Metroland poster and a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale.
Customer reaction
The response from customers who have seen photos of the makeover online has been sizeable. One reacted: 'Looks mint, shall have to come down soon!' Another commented: 'This looks class!! I’m ready for the nfl season openers.'
Given its location a few minutes' walk from town, close to both Newcastle and Northumbria universities and not far from St James' Park, The Hancock appeals to city workers, students and United fans. Its new look should only make it more popular.
