As summer approaches, travellers seeking the perfect European escape often turn to Greece, a nation blessed with over 6,000 islands and islets. However, choosing among this vast archipelago can be daunting. To simplify the decision, yacht charter company Sunsail has conducted an extensive analysis of reviews and geographical data to identify the finest Greek island to visit this year.
The Top-Ranked Island Paradise
Each island was scored out of 26 points, with higher marks indicating a more peaceful and serene destination. The clear winner, achieving an impressive score of 24, is the breathtaking island of Lefkada. This stunning location is frequently celebrated as Homer's legendary Ithaca, the fabled homeland of the epic hero Odysseus.
Spectacular Beaches and Natural Beauty
Lefkada is renowned for possessing some of the most spectacular beaches on the planet. These range from lively shores dotted with sunbeds and traditional tavernas to wild, unspoilt stretches of coastline. According to TripAdvisor, the crown jewel is Porto Katsiki, a serene bay framed by dramatic white cliffs that create a striking contrast with the crystal-clear, azure waters.
Visitors should note that while refreshments and beverages are available at the top of the steps leading down to the shore, bringing your own parasol is advisable, as the cliffs offer minimal shade. One holidaymaker, Alberto, praised the beach on TripAdvisor, describing it as "superb" and noting, "The water is wonderful, with simply incredible colors. Like almost all the beaches on the west coast of Lefkada, the water is immediately deep and, despite being milky blue, it is all in all clear." He did recommend arriving in the morning to avoid afternoon crowds from boat trips.
Island-Hopping Adventures
To fully experience everything Lefkada has to offer, a boat tour is considered essential. The island's prime location makes it an ideal base for exploring the numerous tiny islands scattered across the warm Ionian Sea. Among the many spots to discover, Kastos stands out as a must-visit destination.
This small island is home to fewer than 100 permanent residents and exudes the charm of a floating village adrift in the middle of the ocean. With only one small harbour, a cluster of stone houses, and a handful of tavernas, life here slows to a gentle, peaceful pace. The harbour-side tavernas serve freshly caught fish, providing the perfect setting to relax and unwind.
Lefkada's combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and ideal positioning for island-hopping solidifies its status as a premier travel destination for 2026, offering a tranquil yet adventurous getaway for all types of travellers.
