Kraków has been named Europe's best city break, achieving a 92% destination score in a Which? survey of over 1,600 travelers, beating Venice into second place. The Polish city offers historic architecture, inexpensive stays, and a friendly welcome, with pints averaging £3 and pierogi platters under £10.
Why Kraków Stands Out
Unlike many European cities, Kraków remained largely intact during World War II because it was occupied rather than bombed. This preserved its medieval Old Town, complete with stone walls, cobbled streets, and baroque buildings. The city was also recently voted the cleanest in the world.
Affordable City Break
According to Which?, "It's no surprise. Kraków has the sort of architectural grandeur that maybe half a dozen European cities can claim." Prices remain low: a pint costs around £3, and a pierogi platter is under £10. Even in the main square, the most expensive beer was £4.50.
Top Attractions
The Czartoryski Museum houses Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine in a climate-controlled room. Melex tours (electric golf carts) offer guided trips from £10. The city is walkable, with modern trams available for cheap rides.
Friendly Atmosphere
Locals are chatty and welcoming, taking pride in their city. Kraków has shaken off its stag-do reputation, offering a clean, vibrant, and safe environment for tourists.
