Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire has been named Scotland's "most underrated town" by popular Scottish travel blog Walking Bonnie Scotland. The post, shared on Wednesday, October 14, praised the settlement for its architecture, history, walking trails, and easy access to nature.
A town of history and landmarks
Kilmarnock is a former burgh that serves as the primary commercial and industrial centre of East Ayrshire. Known locally as 'Killie', the town is home to more than 280 listed buildings and structures, according to Historic Environment Scotland.
Among its most famous historic sites are the Dick Institute, a public library, museum, and art gallery that welcomes tens of thousands of visitors each year, and Dean Castle, which sits within Dean Castle Country Park and dates back to the 14th century.
Shopping, dining, and local favourites
The town also offers a range of independent shops, including Nova Boutique, family-run children's store The Purple Turtle, and gift shop I Love Gifts. Dining options include The Long House, Cafe Da Vinci, and Jamaican restaurant Reggaelicious Kitchen.
Kilmarnock is also home to Joanna's Chippy Van, which previously won Best Mobile Fish and Chips at the Scottish Fish and Chip Awards.
Killieween tradition
With Halloween approaching, Kilmarnock prepares for its annual 'Killieween' tradition, celebrating the holiday on the last Friday of October rather than October 31. The origins are unclear, but some believe it relates to the town's industrial heritage, as payday traditionally fell on the last Friday of the month.
