A UK destination has outperformed dozens of beautiful islands to be named one of Europe’s best road trips. New research from Avis has revealed the top island destinations for scenic road trips.
The research assessed 40 European islands based on terrain variety, elevation, landmarks, and visual appeal. The study reveals that some of Europe’s most popular island destinations have just as much to offer on the road as they do by the poolside, with routes taking in volcanic peaks, ancient forests, dramatic cliffs, coastal roads and historic towns.
Tenerife Tops the Ranking
Tenerife tops the scenic road trip ranking, scoring 83.5 out of 100 and a terrain score of 10 out of 10. A seven-hour circuit covers UNESCO World Heritage Site Mount Teide, the sheer Los Gigantes cliffs, the ancient Anaga Forest and the colonial streets of La Laguna.
Second place goes to Gran Canaria (82.7), which shares the same terrain score, earning it the "continent in miniature" description from the data. Volcanic peaks, desert dunes, deep ravines, and the Atlantic coastline sit within a single six-hour circuit, taking in Roque Nublo, the Maspalomas dunes, and the Bandama Caldera.
Rounding out the top three, Madeira (78.7) scores nine out of 10 for terrain with a circuit that runs six hours. The Cabo Girão Skywalk is one of Europe's highest sea cliffs, while the Laurisilva ancient forest covers a third of the island and holds UNESCO World Heritage status. Natural lava pools at Porto Moniz add a further stop.
Isle of Skye: The UK's Top Entry
The UK’s first addition to the list comes in seventh place. With a scenic score of 63.7 out of 100, the Isle of Skye in Scotland has route highlights including the Old Man of Storr, Quiraing, Dunvegan Castle, Fairy Pools and Neist Point Lighthouse.
The 6.5-hour circuit showcases some of Scotland’s most recognisable natural landmarks, combining rugged mountains, coastal roads, waterfalls and historic sites into a single scenic drive. The island’s maximum elevation of 992m and dramatic Highland landscapes contributed to its strong performance.
It remains a standout option for travellers seeking dramatic landscapes and a memorable road trip experience without leaving the UK.
