A Spanish pilot has shared insider tips for British tourists looking to blend in with locals, advising them to avoid ordering sangria and instead try authentic drinks like horchata. Vueling First Officer Maite Pagès described sangria as 'tourist bait' and recommended alternatives such as Tinto de Verano or Clara.
Pagès highlighted horchata, a creamy, nutty drink popular in Valencia, often paired with fartons pastries. She also warned against ordering iced coffee in Spain, noting that locals prefer hot, strong coffee like café con leche or cortado.
Beyond drinks, Pagès advised Brits to adopt Spanish eating habits, such as taking long lunches and dining late. She suggested skipping flip-flops and sarongs in favour of stylish attire to fit in with locals.
The pilot also noted that Spanish nightlife starts late, with bars not getting busy until midnight, and recommended embracing the afternoon siesta between 2pm and 5pm when shops close.
