Hollingworth Lake in Littleborough, on the edge of Greater Manchester, offers a seaside-style day out when the sun shines, complete with a chippy, amusements, and watersports.
A long history as a tourist destination
Originally a reservoir built as the main water source for the Rochdale Canal, the lake was developed as a tourist resort, with day trippers arriving by train from Manchester, Bradford, and Leeds, and hotels being built.
In the early twentieth century its popularity waned, and the area was used as an army camp in the First World War. Following the Second World War, boating rights were bought by Rochdale Council, and the area was developed into Hollingworth Country Park in 1974.
Watersports and family attractions
The lake is now a popular spot for watersports, walking, and sailing. Hollingworth Lake Activity Centre on Lake Bank road offers sailing, kayaking, canoeing, powerboating, and windsurfing, as well as rock climbing and mountain biking.
Families can hire pedalos, and stand-up paddle boards are available for the brave. Next to the activity centre is the Beach pub, a Greene King establishment with a huge beer garden and views across the water.
Food, amusements, and walks
Across the road are cafes and restaurants, including Mr Thomas's chippy and Riva Italian Restaurant, plus Family Fun Amusements arcade. On the opposite side of the water, the Pavillion Cafe serves meals, snacks, and ice creams, ideal for a pitstop on the 2.3-mile walk around the lake.
Further round is The Wine Press, a gastro pub with seating by the water, and picnic tables are available. A small play area for kids and numerous walking trails are also on offer.
Car parks and practical info
Three car parks serve the lake: Hollingworth Lake Country Park Car Park (OL15 0AQ), Hollingworth Road Car Park (OL15 0AZ), and Lake Bank Car Park (OL15 0DQ), all pay and display with charges from 8am to 8pm and starting from £1 for one hour. Hollingworth Road allows free overnight parking.
