Heacham: Norfolk village compared to Provence for lavender and beaches

Heacham, a village on Norfolk's western coast, is being compared to the sun-drenched Provence region in France, thanks to its lavender fields and serene beaches. The village offers views across the Wash and is accessible by train from Cambridge city centre in 45 minutes, or approximately an hour and a half by car.

Home of UK lavender

The village's main attraction is Norfolk Lavender, an internationally known destination with lavender gardens. The site includes the Mill Kitchen, a farm shop, gardens, and a plant centre. Norfolk Lavender holds the National Plant Collection of Lavandula, granted by Plant Heritage, safeguarding more than 50 distinct lavender varieties.

Visitors can walk through the lavender fields and enjoy the scents before visiting the cafe. One reviewer said: "What a lovely place to pay a short visit too. It's lovely to see all the different lavender growing, and they have loads of plants of different species to buy. You can see some of the old machinery they used to use and the history of the company."

Another added: "Really nice place to visit. Stroll among the lavender plants and smell the strong scent. Plants are available to buy and a very well-equipped gift shop. They have an extensive collection of different English lavender."

Two distinct beaches

Heacham has two beaches: The North Beach and The South Beach. North Beach is livelier, with a promenade featuring beach huts, a café, a fish bar, and a seaside amusement arcade. South Beach offers a quieter retreat with rolling sand dunes and panoramic views across the marshes into Norfolk.

One visitor to South Beach said: "Really lovely beach – we went early in the morning and the beach was practically deserted. The place was beautiful, so clean, and the outlook was just amazing with the swooping gulls and the lapping waves; it was perfect. My dog was so impressed she even went for a dip!"

The village has numerous dining options, including pubs and fish and chip shops. The Royal Sandringham Estate is about 15 minutes away in the Norfolk countryside.
