Gairloch: My New Favourite Scottish Highlands Holiday Village

Gairloch, a small village in Wester Ross with a population of around 600, has become a top recommendation for a Scottish staycation. Located along the shores of Loch Gairloch, it offers postcard-perfect scenery and a tranquil atmosphere.

Journey and First Impressions

Travel writer Alexander Smail journeyed from Edinburgh to Gairloch, taking over five hours including stops. He described the drive as 'definitely worth the journey' and urged others to 'bite the bullet' and visit the Northern Highlands. Upon arrival, Smail noted that the village 'looked straight out of a postcard' with clear skies and sublime views over the loch.

Café Culture and Local Cuisine

Smail first visited The Mountain Coffee Co, a café with a bookshop called Hillbillies attached. He enjoyed a macchiato, a jam scone, and sparkling water in a glass-enclosed seating area with views over Gair Loch. He described the scone as 'unlike any I have eaten before' with a dollop of jam on top. For dinner, he tried the Chinese takeaway Hai Yang, praising its crispy shredded beef in honey chilli sauce as 'one of the tastiest I've had'. The following morning, he visited Coast Coffee Company for a breakfast smoothie, yogurt with bananas, honey, nuts, and seeds, and a black coffee. He noted the service was 'above and beyond'.

Shopping and Entertainment

Smail explored local shops, highlighting Vinyl Stop, a record store with a great selection of pre-2000s albums. He was surprised to find such a shop in a small village, calling it a 'standout'. He also browsed artwork and pins at The Mountain Coffee Co.

Overall Experience

Smail spent two days in Gairloch, camping nearby overnight. He concluded that the long journey is 'more than worth it' and wholeheartedly recommends Gairloch for a summer staycation. The village's combination of stunning views, quality food, and unique shops makes it an ideal destination.
