Fowey Named Best Value Autumn Staycation in UK

Fowey in Cornwall has been named the best value location for an autumn staycation, according to research by credit card firm Zable. The charming harbour town offers more than affordability, with a high street packed with independent shops and scenic coastal walks.

A Historic Harbour Town

The town sits on the banks of the river Fowey and traces its roots back to medieval times. Its naturally deep water harbour made it a significant historical port and commercial hub, while the streets showcase Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The surrounding region holds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status.

Walks and Independent Shops

For visitors keen to explore the landscape, the creeks and coves walk is essential. This four-mile circular route includes two ferry crossings and highlights woodlands and coastal pathways around the town. The walk takes two to three hours including ferry journeys.

Within the town, Fore Street serves as the main high street, with twisting alleyways ideal for an afternoon of browsing. Shops include Jo Downes Handmade Glass, featuring locally blown glass artworks, and Heather Jane and Co., which showcases art from 180 local makers.

A Historic Pub to Finish

The Ship Inn on Trafalgar Square, built in 1570, offers a quintessential Cornish pub experience with a huge open fire, perfect for an autumn pint.
