Ephraim Owens, an Indianapolis native and former contestant on television's The Voice, has been chosen to sing America the Beautiful before the Indianapolis 500 on May 24, race organisers announced on Tuesday.
This marks the second consecutive year that Owens has been selected to perform the patriotic song prior to IndyCar's premier event of the season. He also sang the national anthem at the 2024 Brickyard 400.
A Homegrown Talent
Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles expressed his enthusiasm for Owens' return, stating: "Ephraim's love for his home state of Indiana is just as evident as his passion and talent for musical performance. Ephraim has performed several times at IMS, and his performance of 'America the Beautiful' will be an important and moving tribute to our country as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary and the traditions of the Indy 500."
Rise to Fame on The Voice
Owens gained widespread recognition during Season 24 of The Voice, where his blind audition performance of Labrinth's Beneath Your Beautiful prompted all four judges to turn their chairs. Ultimately, Owens chose John Legend as his coach, a decision made with guidance from his daughter Evelyn Ann, who is now six and a half years old. Although Owens was eliminated in the subsequent round, he has continued to perform publicly and has become a fan favourite at the Brickyard.
His upcoming performance at the Indianapolis 500 is expected to be a highlight of the pre-race ceremonies, adding to the event's rich tradition of celebrating American heritage and speed.
