Air New Zealand Introduces Sleep Pods for Economy Passengers

Long-haul flights have long been a challenge for travellers, often involving hours of discomfort in cramped seats as they cross time zones. While upgrades to business or first class provide lie-flat beds, these options are typically prohibitively expensive for most economy flyers. Now, Air New Zealand is changing the game with a new service that brings affordable sleep solutions to economy and premium economy passengers.

Skynest: The World's First In-Flight Sleep Pods

From May 18, passengers on Air New Zealand's ultra long-haul flights between New York and Auckland can book slots in the Economy Skynest™, with full availability starting in November this year. Billed as "the world's first sleep pods in the sky," Skynest features six individual lie-flat nests, each bookable for four-hour slots during the journey. This innovation is particularly valuable on routes like New York to Auckland, which can last up to 18 hours, making it one of the longest flights globally.

The pods are located in a separate area of the cabin, equipped with privacy curtains for discretion. Each pod measures approximately six foot six inches in height, accommodating even taller passengers comfortably. To enhance the experience, every booking includes a complimentary amenity kit with an eye mask and ear plugs, and bed linens are refreshed between users to ensure hygiene. Additional features include a seatbelt for safety during turbulence, a USB charging outlet, and a small reading light.

Cost and Comparison to Other Options

A session in Skynest starts at $495 New Zealand Dollars, roughly £215. While this represents a significant add-on cost, it remains far cheaper than upgrading to a premium cabin, offering a middle ground for travellers seeking comfort without the high price tag. Air New Zealand has a history of such innovations; in 2011, it launched Skycouch, which allows economy passengers to reserve an entire row that converts into a lie-flat bed with a pull-out footrest for extra width.

Skycouch is available on selected routes using Boeing 777-300ER or 787-9 aircraft, with costs ranging from NZ$525 to $1,500 per row (about £228 to £652), depending on route and availability. Other airlines are following suit: United Airlines plans to introduce Relax Rows in 2027, and Lufthansa already offers Sleeper Rows on flights over 11 hours, indicating a growing trend towards enhanced economy comfort in long-haul travel.

This move by Air New Zealand highlights a shift in the aviation industry, prioritising passenger well-being on extended journeys. As travel demands evolve, such innovations could become more widespread, making long-haul flights more bearable for economy travellers worldwide.
