Dundee has been named Scotland's most affordable city for a day out, according to new research by travel insurance specialists InsureandGo. A day out in the city costs £74.34 on average, which is £30.11 less than a day in Edinburgh at £104.45.
Study of 124 European cities
The study investigated the price of a standard day out in 124 cities across Europe, including 24 in the UK. Factors considered included the cost of food and drink, public transportation, and popular attractions.
Dundee ranked number one for Scotland and number two for the UK as a whole, placed behind only Coventry. The coastal city sits on the Firth of Tay estuary.
Cost of food, drink and attractions
The estimated average cost of lunch in Dundee was found to be £16.05, while a three-course dinner costs £30.10 on average. A pint costs £4.32 on average, and Dundee has the cheapest cappuccino of any UK city at £3.30 on average.
Popular eateries in Dundee include Turkish restaurant Milas and steak house Gidi Grill. The city is also home to many pubs and bars, including The Barrelman, the Nether Inn, The Phoenix, Abandon Ship, and Trades House. Popular coffee shops include The Flame Tree Cafe, Stenecki Coffeel, Sasha's Corner, and Empire State Coffee Artisan Roasters.
Entry to the Discovery Point tourist attraction is priced at £12.60. Other notable destinations in the city include the V&A Dundee, the Verdant Works Museum, The McManus art gallery and museum, and the Dundee Museum of Transport.
Other Scottish cities compared
Glasgow came second for Scotland, with a day out costing £77.72 on average. A day in Aberdeen costs £83.32 on average.
