The acclaimed Detour Discotheque, hailed as one of the best new experiences globally, is relocating to a historic nunnery in southern Italy for its next spectacular event. This intimate, roaming festival will take over the iconic city of Matera for a dazzling seventies-themed weekend in September, promising an unforgettable fusion of music, culture, and architecture.
A Unique Venue in a World Wonder City
From Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September 2026, Detour Discotheque will animate the ancient former convent of Fondazione Monacelle, now a not-for-profit cultural centre, alongside the stylish performance space Area 8. Matera itself, recently named one of the New Wonders of the World by Condé Nast Traveller, provides a breathtaking backdrop with its UNESCO-listed Sassi cave districts and terraced landscapes.
Exclusive Access and Cultural Significance
With only 300 tickets available, this exclusive event coincides with Matera's designation as the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue for 2026. Attendees will enjoy Italian-made pizzas and snacks from official food partner Crosta Mollica, while dancing in subterranean spaces and terraces that highlight the city's unique architectural heritage.
From Remote Locations to Historic Settings
Previously celebrated as the most remote nightclub in the world, Detour Discotheque has hosted events in an Iceland fjord, on a Scottish island, and atop a Swiss mountain, attracting international guests from India, the US, Australia, and Vietnam. Its move to Matera continues this tradition of unexpected and picturesque locations.
Founder's Vision and Practical Details
Founder Jonny Ensall explained, "After the experience in Puglia in 2025, returning to southern Italy made complete sense. Matera is astonishingly beautiful, but also a creatively progressive place. Its history, setting and cultural ambition make it the perfect setting." Located in the Basilicata region near Bari Airport, Matera is easily accessible and served as a filming location for the James Bond film No Time to Die.
Tickets for the event are priced from £195, with a pre-sale now open. A launch party will be held at the Aethos Hotel in London on Thursday 12 February, offering a preview of the disco magic to come. Previous editions have featured renowned DJs like Erol Alkan, DJ Paulette, and Rahaan, ensuring a high-quality musical experience for all attendees.
