Lymm, a historic Cheshire village nestled between Manchester and Liverpool, is an ideal summer destination with its lake, canalside pubs, and vibrant village centre. Known for its Anglo-Saxon heritage and waterways like the Bridgewater Canal and Lymm Dam, the village offers a tranquil escape with easy access from major cities.
Location and Accessibility
Lymm is situated just over a mile south of the Manchester Ship Canal and River Mersey, with Warrington six miles west, Altrincham seven miles east, and Knutsford nine miles southeast. The village's name means “place of running water,” reflecting its rich waterway history.
Lymm Dam: A Scenic Walk
On the edge of the village, beside the A56, lies Lymm Dam—a dam and lake created in 1824. The circular walking trail around the perimeter spans about 1.5 to 2 km and takes 40 to 60 minutes to complete. The route offers shaded woodland areas, boardwalks, and sandstone rocks. Many walkers extend their journey by linking to The Dingle, a wooded valley with a stream and waterfalls leading to the village centre.
Village Attractions and Dining
Lymm features charming cottages, bakeries, cafes, and pubs. The family-run Lymm Brewing Co, operating The Brewery Tap on Bridgewater Street, brews traditional North Western style real ale. A notable curiosity is a dinosaur footprint—actually from a Triassic reptile—discovered in the 1840s and displayed in a glass cabinet in the village.
Canalside Pub and Events
The Golden Fleece, an 18th-century pub by the Bridgewater Canal, is a popular spot with a beer garden. It also shows World Cup fixtures during the tournament's final week. Visitors might hear the town crier at the Grade I listed Lymm Cross. Annual events include the duck race, transport day, Lymm Festival, and artisanal markets.
Weather and Day Trip Tips
According to the Met Office, temperatures in Greater Manchester are set to peak at 27-28°C between July 14 and 17, before dropping to 23°C for the weekend. The heatwave threshold of 25°C means the two-week heatwave ends on Saturday. With slightly cooler weather, an afternoon out in Lymm is ideal.
