Carnival Cruises has issued an important dress code reminder for passengers who pack bikinis, warning that two-piece swimwear, G-strings, and monokinis are banned in certain areas during voyages. The announcement came on a recent trip aboard the Carnival Splendour, which departed from Sydney on Tuesday, 2 June, for an eight-night journey through the South Pacific.
Dress Code Notice for Lifou Island
Passengers received a letter from ship master Eduardo Ferrone, delivered to their cabins, outlining the dress code requirements ahead of their first stop at Lifou, New Caledonia. The island, known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and pristine beaches, is a tribal destination where modest attire is expected. The notice explicitly banned revealing clothing, including two-piece bikinis, G-strings, monokinis, and mankinis, as well as topless sunbathing, in all public areas such as markets, churches, and communal spaces.
Carnival's Official Guidance
On its website, Carnival explains: "We kindly ask guests to respect the local culture and rules in the ports we visit." The cruise line notes that Lifou is a tribal island populated by proud indigenous people whose culture is based on respect and is often highly religious. Visitors are advised to avoid bikinis or monokini-style swimsuits and instead choose traditional one-piece or full-piece swimwear. Failure to observe local customs could jeopardize Carnival's ability to continue including Lifou on future itineraries.
Passenger Reactions on Reddit
The dress code sparked heated debate on Reddit, with users expressing opposing views. One supporter wrote: "Once you get off the ship you are no longer 'on a cruise'. Respect the local customs, cover up. If you don't like it stay on the ship and sit by the pool." Another added: "It's not new, same rules applied years ago when I visited. Travel to experience different things. If you can only tolerate places exactly like home, stay home." However, a critic countered that no one should "policy women's bodies," stating: "I would stay on the boat there and keep the money to myself!"
