Brits Embrace Coastal Staycations Amid Rising Travel Costs, Poll Reveals

A significant shift in holiday preferences is underway in the United Kingdom, as new research indicates a growing number of Britons are opting for domestic 'staycations' over international travel. A comprehensive poll of 2,000 adults, commissioned by Vauxhall, reveals that over a third of respondents would now prefer to holiday on home soil rather than venture abroad.

Cost and Convenience Drive the Staycation Surge

The study highlights that rising travel expenses are a primary factor influencing this trend, with 50% of Brits stating that increased costs have made them more likely to choose a UK-based holiday. Shorter travel times and the ability to avoid the often stressful airport experience rank among the top attractions of staying local. For many, the convenience of travelling by car is paramount, with 80% of those surveyed identifying it as their preferred mode of transport for these trips, covering an average distance of just under 206 miles.

Eurig Druce, managing director of Vauxhall, commented on the findings, noting, "The UK is such a wonderful place to holiday, and it's been great finding out why people love it so much. Everyone has memories of holidaying in the UK from their childhood, and more than ever, Brits are choosing ‘staycations’ over going abroad, whether that be because of the beautiful scenery on our doorstep or the comfort of travelling in your own car."

Coastal Getaways Top the List of Favourite Staycation Types

When it comes to the type of domestic holiday Brits favour most, coastal getaways emerge as the clear winner. A striking 62% of respondents consider a 'coastal getaway' the best form of staycation, with 28% specifically citing the UK's stunning coastlines as the finest aspect of holidaying at home. This preference is followed by city breaks, favoured by 50%, and camping or glamping adventures, enjoyed by 28%.

The research also pinpointed regional favourites for domestic escapes. The South West of England was deemed the best destination by 21% of those polled, followed by Scotland at 15% and Wales at 11%.

Financial and Environmental Considerations

Brits are willing to invest in their domestic holidays, with the average person prepared to spend £391.11 per trip. However, the weather remains a potential downside, with 78% acknowledging that it could make or break a UK holiday experience.

Environmental awareness is also playing a role in holiday planning. The study found that 15% of parents have been asked by their children to adopt more environmentally friendly practices when organising trips. Furthermore, one in ten respondents stated that sustainability is a priority when booking their holidays. For the 77% of electric vehicle drivers surveyed, the availability of charging points at their accommodation is an important consideration.

Druce added, "The Grandland Electric has been designed with families in mind, with a spacious interior, large boot and an electric range of over 300 miles, making it the ideal vehicle for a ‘staycation.’ Whether it is stunning coastlines, rural escapes or bustling city centres, the home nations have some fantastic places on offer for people to enjoy."
