A Scottish grandmother has tragically died at Alicante Airport after suffering a burst varicose vein while returning from what she described as her 'best holiday'. Angela McTier, 48, from Blantyre in Lanarkshire, fell ill in a taxi on the way to the airport and collapsed in the departure lounge.
Despite emergency treatment, she passed away at the scene on Tuesday July 22. Her daughter, Michelle Hilston, 24, said her mother had been working to get healthier to see her granddaughters grow up. Ms McTier regularly looked after her grandchildren and was due to go on holiday with them next month.
Ms Hilston described her mother as a devoted grandmother who loved holidays and was thrilled to see a video of her 11-month-old granddaughter taking her first steps on the day she died. 'I'm glad that's the last video she saw of the kids,' she said.
A Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office spokesperson confirmed they are supporting the family. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with repatriation and funeral costs.
