A devastating bus crash involving British tourists in the Canary Islands has resulted in one fatality and 27 injuries, according to local government reports. The incident occurred on Friday, 10 April 2026, off the GM-2 road in San Sebastian de La Gomera, on the island of La Gomera, located on the east coast of the archipelago.
Emergency Response and Casualties
Emergency services were rapidly deployed to the scene after receiving reports just after 1pm that a bus had veered off the road and slid down a slope. The response included firefighters, police, the Spanish Red Cross, and multiple ambulances, with an air ambulance also dispatched to assist. Photographs shared by the Canary Islands government on social media indicate the bus came off the road at a sharp hairpin bend, ultimately coming to rest in a ravine.
Injuries and Hospital Transfers
Among the injured, four people were reported to be in serious condition. A 73-year-old man and a 42-year-old man, both suffering from traumatic injuries, were initially taken to Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe Hospital in San Sebastian de La Gomera. Due to the severity of their injuries, both were later transferred by helicopter to hospitals in Tenerife for advanced medical care. Additionally, two other seriously injured individuals were admitted to Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe Hospital, along with 23 others who sustained minor injuries.
Government Response and Support
At 2pm, the Canary Islands government activated a state of alert in response to the crash, mobilising additional resources and coordination efforts. Shortly after, Fernando Clavijo, the president of the Canary Islands, posted on social media platform X to express his condolences and support for the victims and their families, emphasising the community's solidarity during this difficult time.
Ongoing Investigation and Safety Concerns
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, with initial evidence pointing to the challenging road conditions at the hairpin bend. The incident has raised concerns about road safety in the region, particularly for tourist transport. The 112 Canarias official account provided updates on X, detailing the emergency response and confirming the involvement of British nationals. As the situation develops, further details are expected to emerge regarding the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
