A British tourist in his 50s has been rescued by helicopter after breaking his leg in a jet ski accident off the coast of Ibiza. The man lost control of his watercraft near S'Estanyol, close to the village of Jesus, prompting a major emergency response.
The Spanish Coastguard dispatched the Helimer 201 rescue helicopter after a coastguard vessel determined that sea conditions made it unsafe to approach the shoreline. A woman who was with the man at the time of the incident was uninjured and managed to raise the alarm.
Before the helicopter arrived, a local restaurant owner and lifeguards from nearby Talamanca beach, where the British man and his partner are believed to have come from, reached the scene in a semi-inflatable dinghy. The restaurant owner described the injured man's condition, saying: "He couldn't move and was complaining about the pain."
The tourist was winched to safety by the coastguard helicopter and subsequently taken to Ibiza's Can Misses Hospital, from where he was released overnight. The accident occurred at around 3pm on Monday.
S'Estanyol and its surrounding area are popular with both celebrities and locals, and the spot is often quieter than other beaches on the island during peak season.
