A dream Spanish holiday has turned into a nightmare for a British family after a 48-year-old woman was left fighting for her life following a horrific fall from a hotel balcony in Benidorm.
The tourist, who has not been named, plummeted from the fourth-floor balcony of the resort's Presidente Hotel on Monday afternoon. Emergency services, including the local police and SAMU ambulances, rushed to the scene in the Levante area of the popular Costa Blanca destination.
According to local reports, the woman was on holiday with her partner when the tragic incident occurred. She was initially treated at the scene by medical teams before being transferred to the intensive care unit at Villajoyosa Hospital, where her condition is described as critical.
A Family's Agonising Wait
The woman's heartbroken family is now maintaining a vigil by her bedside. She is understood to be on a ventilator as doctors work tirelessly to stabilise her injuries.
An official spokesperson for the National Police in Alicante confirmed they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fall. "A British woman was injured after falling from a height inside the Presidente Hotel," they stated. "We are investigating the case and a report will be sent to the court."
A Stark Reminder of Balcony Dangers
This devastating incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential dangers associated with hotel balconies abroad. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) consistently warns British tourists about balcony safety.
Their official travel advice highlights: "There have been a number of serious accidents involving people falling from balconies. Don’t take unnecessary risks, especially after drinking alcohol."
The community in Benidorm and fellow tourists have been left deeply shocked by the event, which casts a shadow over the usually vibrant resort.
