A British holidaymaker is in a critical condition after a terrifying 40ft fall from a fourth-floor apartment balcony in the notorious party resort of Magaluf.
The 30-year-old man, who had just arrived on the Spanish island of Majorca for a week-long lads' holiday, plunged from the height in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene on the Punta Ballena strip, the epicentre of the resort's nightlife.
Shocked holidaymakers watched in horror as paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was stretchered into a waiting ambulance. He was then transferred to a specialist trauma unit at Son Espases Hospital in Palma, where he remains in a "serious but stable" condition.
Local reports suggest the man was on a clubbing holiday with friends when the tragic accident occurred. He had reportedly been out celebrating his arrival on the island just hours before the fall.
A Familiar Scene of Tragedy
The incident happened on a street packed with bars and clubs frequented by British tourists. The Punta Ballena strip has been the backdrop for numerous previous accidents and anti-social behaviour incidents, leading to calls for a crackdown on excessive drinking tourism.
A spokesman for the Calvia council, which covers Magaluf, confirmed emergency services were called to the scene. An investigation is now underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fall.
A Stark Warning for Sun-Seekers
This shocking incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that can accompany holidays focused heavily on alcohol and nightlife. It has prompted fresh warnings from tour operators and safety campaigners about balcony safety and responsible drinking.
The UK Foreign Office has been informed of the incident and is providing support to the man's family. A spokesman said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has been hospitalised in Mallorca and are in contact with the local authorities."
