A desperate search is intensifying in the rugged hills of Tenerife for a 19-year-old British man who vanished after a night out with friends. Jay Slater, an apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was last heard from in the early hours of Monday morning.
The teenager had travelled to the Canary Island for a holiday and was attending the NRG music festival. His last known location was in the remote village of Masca in the Macizo de Teno mountains, a popular hiking spot known for its challenging terrain.
Final Phone Call Sparks Alarm
Jay's last contact with a friend was a panicked phone call around 8:15 am on Monday. He reported that he was lost, desperately thirsty, and his phone battery was on the verge of dying. This chilling call has become the focal point of the extensive search operation now underway.
His heartbroken mother, Debbie Duncan, has flown to Tenerife to aid in the search, describing the situation as an "absolute living nightmare." She has made emotional pleas for anyone with information to come forward.
Large-Scale Search Underway
Spanish authorities have deployed significant resources to find Jay. The search, involving the Guardia Civil, mountain rescue units, and fire crews, is concentrated on the harsh and rocky landscape around the Masca ravine.
Despite the challenging conditions, including high temperatures, search teams have been combing the area on foot and with helicopters equipped with heat-seeking technology. A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil confirmed the operation is ongoing but so far, Jay has not been located.
Family's Agonising Wait
Jay's family and friends are clinging to hope. His friend, Brad Hargreaves, who was on the holiday with him, recounted their last night together at a club in Papagayo before Jay left with people he had just met.
His mother Debbie told reporters, "We are just desperate for any news. He is a loving, popular lad with a large group of friends and we are all just praying he is found safe and well."
