Bournemouth, a popular seaside destination in Dorset, has been named the UK's most "rainproof" beach town, offering visitors plenty of options when the weather turns wet. According to a study by Parkdean Resorts, Bournemouth scores 95 out of 100 on the company's Rainy Day Index, which considers nearby indoor attractions, shelter opportunities, and weather data.
Why Bournemouth Tops the List
With seven miles of coastline and 12 nearby indoor facilities, Bournemouth beats other seaside spots like Exmouth Beach and Weymouth Beach, which came in second and third places with six and seven indoor attractions respectively. The study also found that one in three Brits would cancel a holiday altogether if heavy rain was forecast.
Indoor Attractions for Rainy Days
For tourists lucky enough to visit on a sunny day, Bournemouth offers classic deckchairs and sandy seaside sunshine. However, if the sun doesn't shine, the town provides rainy-day entertainment including aquariums, museums, indoor climbing centres, and theatres. Notable attractions include the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, a striking clifftop Victorian mansion overlooking the sea, and the Oceanarium, home to sharks, turtles, and tropical sea creatures. RockReef on the pier combines indoor climbing walls and adventure activities, while the BH2 cinema complex, Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre, and Westbourne Village offer additional indoor options.
Outdoor Activities When Weather Clears
When the weather clears up, visitors can explore the Lower Gardens, cycle to Hengistbury Head, or visit nearby Sandbanks Beach. Family-friendly spots like Alum Chine Beach and the upmarket Sandbanks Beach are also worth including in the itinerary. A short trip from Bournemouth takes visitors to Durdle Door, a striking geological monument over the sea.
Top 10 Rainproof Beaches
The ranking of the top 10 rainproof beaches also includes Woolacombe Beach, Paignton Sands, Sandbanks Beach, Llandudno North Shore Beach, Bridlington South Beach, Rhyl Beach, and Portobello Beach.
