Holidaymakers Urged to Book Flights Within 36 Hours Before Price Surge
A travel expert has issued an urgent warning that holiday costs are set to skyrocket this week, urging travellers to book flights within the next 36 hours to avoid significant price increases. The combination of geopolitical tensions, rising fuel costs, and imminent tax changes creates a perfect storm for holiday budgets.
Multiple Factors Driving Holiday Price Increases
The recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran have caused substantial disruption to global travel networks. The Middle East serves as a crucial transport hub, and the conflict has triggered a dramatic surge in oil prices, leading to inflation and higher aviation fuel costs that airlines are likely to pass on to consumers.
In a further blow to travellers, the UK's Air Passenger Duty (APD) is scheduled to increase on April 1. The Office for Budget Responsibility defines APD as a duty chargeable per passenger flying from UK airports to both domestic and international destinations.
Air Passenger Duty Changes Explained
Originally unveiled by the Labour Government in 2024, the APD increase will add £2 to economy class short-haul flights, while long-haul flights will experience a 13 percent rate increase. The most dramatic change affects private jet levies, which will leap by nearly 50 percent.
Confused.com travel expert Tom Vaughan explained that these changes could mean additional costs ranging from as little as £8 to over £1,100 per passenger, depending on destination and travel class.
"Any increase in Air Passenger Duty is likely to be felt by holidaygoers, even if it seems small at first glance," Vaughan said. "From April, changes to APD will apply across different flight bands, meaning both short-haul and longer journeys could become more expensive."
Impact on Household Budgets
Vaughan emphasized that although the tax is included in ticket prices, travellers will ultimately pay more for their trips regardless of destination. For families and households planning group travel, these additional costs can accumulate rapidly.
"A few pounds per ticket might not seem significant, but when combined with rising accommodation, insurance and spending money, it can put additional pressure on holiday budgets," he noted.
Practical Advice for Travellers
The travel expert offered several recommendations for those planning trips this year:
- Book flights as soon as possible, ideally within the next 36 hours
- Compare flight options across different airlines and booking platforms
- Maintain flexibility with travel dates to find better deals
- Utilize planning tools like airport journey planners to reduce additional travel costs
- Factor APD increases into overall holiday budgeting
"If you're planning to travel this year, it's worth keeping these increases in mind when budgeting your overall costs and booking early where possible to secure better prices," Vaughan advised. "It helps you find the best way to get to the airport so you can spend less time stressing, and more time getting excited for take-off."
With Easter traditionally being a popular period for family getaways, the timing of these price increases presents particular challenges for those seeking spring sunshine. The convergence of geopolitical instability, fuel price volatility, and government tax policy creates an unprecedented situation for the travel industry and consumers alike.
