Consumer champions Which? have identified the best holiday cottage companies in the UK through a new survey of nearly 3,000 people. The research evaluated providers on criteria such as accommodation range, price, and quality, with Rural Retreats emerging as the top performer.
Rural Retreats Takes the Lead
Rural Retreats achieved an overall customer satisfaction score of 87 per cent, earning particular praise for its high-end stays in tranquil locations. The company boasts a portfolio of over 1,000 properties, ranging from traditional thatched cottages to coastal retreats. Survey respondents awarded it five stars for cleanliness and customer service, with special mentions for its welcome hampers.
Landmark Trust and National Trust Close Behind
The Landmark Trust and National Trust both scored 86 per cent in the survey. The Landmark Trust, a conservation charity, restores historic buildings at risk of dilapidation, offering unique stays in medieval longhouses and Gothic follies. While prices can be high, respondents considered them good value for special occasions. Similarly, the National Trust's cottages, despite occasional draughty windows and creaky floorboards, were appreciated for their historic charm. Which? noted that booking far enough in advance can secure similarly historic cottages at more modest prices.
Classic Cottages and Other Top Performers
Classic Cottages, the UK's largest independent holiday cottage company, earned an 84 per cent satisfaction score, with customers impressed by its attentive service and extensive options in the South West and beyond. All four top companies—Rural Retreats, Landmark Trust, National Trust, and Classic Cottages—have relatively small portfolios, with fewer than 1,000 properties each, except Classic Cottages which has slightly over 1,500. This contrasts with major platforms like Airbnb, which lists over 400,000 rentals in the UK but only received three stars for property range in the survey.
Bottom of the Table
At the lower end, Vrbo achieved a 72 per cent satisfaction score, with holidaymakers less impressed by its services and rental quality. The survey highlights that customers prefer more personalised and well-maintained options over large-scale platforms.
