An expatriate who has resided in Benidorm for more than two decades has disclosed a remarkable facet of this renowned holiday destination that often escapes the notice of British visitors. Lucy Young, widely recognised online as the Benidorm Enthusiast, acknowledges the resort's boisterous image but emphasises that there is a profoundly different dimension to explore.
The Underrated Poniente Beachfront
In her latest vlog, Lucy embarked on a stroll along the Poniente beachfront, describing it as the lesser-known segment of Benidorm among British and Irish tourists. She noted that many fail to venture this far, typically gravitating towards the vibrant strip and Levante Beach for affordable drinks and sunbathing.
Poniente Beach, however, extends over three kilometres and remains easily accessible for a sunny walk. Lucy highlighted that this area is predominantly frequented by an international crowd, including Belgians and Dutch visitors, rather than Brits. She praised the breathtaking views, asserting that while Levante Beach garners most attention, Poniente's actual beach quality is unparalleled.
A Completely Different Resort Vibe
Lucy characterised this side of Benidorm as a "completely different resort," offering a much more tranquil holiday experience for those not seeking chaos. The multi-coloured promenade underwent significant redevelopment in the late 2000s, spurring continuous growth with new bars, restaurants, and cafes emerging regularly.
Despite ongoing development, including the construction of skyscrapers and apartment blocks—where seaview properties command at least £500,000—the area retains a subdued atmosphere. Neon lights, karaoke bars, and stag parties are conspicuously absent, confined instead to the strip.
Challenging Benidorm's Reputation
Lucy addressed Benidorm's notorious reputation among some Brits and Irish who have never visited, often labelling it as "chav central" or overrun with drunks. She argued that if such critics were placed on the Poniente side for a day, they would scarcely believe they were in Benidorm, as their perceptions stem from the limited area around the strip and Levante square.
Another expat, Michelle Baker, echoed this sentiment, encouraging visitors to explore Poniente Beach. She described it as "absolutely beautiful" and noted that many mature tourists are discovering these nicer areas, preferring them over the hurly-burly of Levante Beach, which is known for its hotels and nightlife.
The Appeal of Flying Under the Radar
Lucy expressed that it is "kind of nice" that Poniente remains underrated by Brits, allowing it to "fly under the radar." She concluded her video by urging viewers to include Poniente on their must-visit list for any future Benidorm trip, emphasising that even a short journey to this side offers a complete change of scenery.
This revelation underscores Benidorm's diverse appeal, catering not only to party-goers but also to those seeking serene beachfront experiences away from the crowds.
