Bate Bay Named Australia's Best Beach for 2026

Bate Bay in Sutherland Shire, New South Wales, has been named Australia's best beach for 2026 by Tourism Australia's beach ambassador, Brad Farmer. The annual list, which selects the top 10 beaches across the country, aims to showcase Australia's natural beauty both domestically and internationally.

Farmer, who compiled the list after evaluating 12,500 beaches against a 130-point benchmark, described Bate Bay as 'Sydney's longest, least crowded and most beautiful stretch of sand'. He noted that the beach ticked 'pretty much every box', including aesthetic, natural integrity, facilities, access and parking.

Emphasising the importance of atmosphere, Farmer said: 'Just like The Castle, the most important part is the vibe. It sounds cliche, but having a friendly and inviting atmosphere is one of the most important factors when analysing.'

Sutherland Shire Mayor Jack Boyd welcomed the recognition, stating it confirmed 'what locals have long known' and hoped it would boost tourism. New South Wales Tourism Minister Steve Kamper also celebrated the award, saying: 'Sorry Australia, when it comes to the best beach in town, NSW is by far the winner.'

Bate Bay spans 4.8km on Gweagal Country of the Dharawal nation and includes beaches with Indigenous names such as Gunnamatta, Wanda, Elouera and Cronulla. The area holds historical significance as the site of the first recorded interaction between Indigenous Australians and European colonisers in 1770.

Farmer urged for a national framework for coastal protection, highlighting that beaches are a major revenue source and generator of pleasure. 'We need to ensure we don't ruin it for the next generation,' he said.
