An elderly Australian tourist has been found dead inside his hotel room on the Indonesian island of Bali, following concerns raised by a friend who could not reach him by telephone. The 71-year-old man, identified by local authorities as GKA, was discovered unresponsive in his accommodation on the third floor of a hotel located in the coastal area of Sanur, on Bali's southeastern shore.
Welfare Check Initiated After Missed Calls
The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening, when the man's friend alerted hotel staff to request a welfare check, explaining that the Australian had not responded to phone calls since that morning. According to Azel Arisandi, the General Crime unit head at the South Denpasar Police Station, hotel employees subsequently went to the victim's room, knocking on the door and ringing the bell, but received no answer.
Hotel Staff and Security Attempt to Access Room
Staff then summoned the security team and made a second attempt to gain entry, before trying to open the door with a master key. However, the door had also been locked from the inside, necessitating the call for a technician to assist. It was not until approximately 6:30 PM that the technician managed to open the door, revealing the Australian man lying on the bed with his eyes open.
The hotel's chief of security immediately contacted the police, and emergency crews were dispatched to the scene. Sanur is a popular tourist destination in Bali, often described as quieter than other areas on the island, attracting visitors seeking a more relaxed atmosphere.
Investigation Points to Natural Causes
The man's body was transported to Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah General Hospital for further examination. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, but early findings suggest it is not being treated as suspicious.
No signs of violence were found on the victim's body, Azel Arisandi confirmed. The death is estimated to be due to natural causes. A forensic team discovered several medications within the Australian's room, leading investigators to believe he may have had an underlying medical condition.
Ongoing Inquiries and Official Response
While the investigation continues, police have emphasised that there are no indications of foul play. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment regarding the incident, as is standard procedure in such cases involving Australian citizens abroad.
This tragic event highlights the importance of welfare checks for solo travellers and underscores the procedures followed by hotel staff and local authorities in Bali when responding to such emergencies. The community in Sanur and the wider tourist industry in Bali are likely to reflect on this incident, given the area's reputation as a peaceful retreat for international visitors.
