American Expat in London Lists Her Three Biggest British Culture Shocks

An American woman who relocated from sunny California to the United Kingdom has opened up about the most surprising aspects of daily life in Britain. Andrea Celeste, now a resident of London, recently detailed the three major culture shocks she has experienced since making the move across the Atlantic.

The Confusing Greeting: 'You Alright?'

In a TikTok video shared with her 200,600 followers, Celeste explained that one of her initial surprises involved how Brits greet each other. She highlighted the frequent use of the phrase 'you alright?' as a casual hello, which starkly contrasts with its meaning in California.

'I thought it was just a casual hello,' Celeste said, 'but back home, if someone asks 'you alright?', it usually means they're genuinely worried about you.' She added that in the US, questions like 'how are you?' are often formalities where honest answers aren't expected, whereas in the UK, people tend to respond more openly.

Apologising for Everything

Celeste's second culture shock centred on the British propensity to apologise frequently. She noted that in California, saying 'sorry' is typically reserved for when someone has done something wrong. However, in England, she observed people apologising for situations that aren't their fault.

'In England, I noticed people apologising for things that aren't even their fault,' she remarked. 'Like if you walk into them, they'll apologise. It's like 'sorry' is less about guilt and more about keeping things smooth between people.' This cultural nuance, she suggested, helps maintain social harmony.

The Central Role of Pubs in Social Life

The third surprise for Celeste was discovering how integral pubs are to everyday British life. She explained that in California, social gatherings might occur at various venues like restaurants, coffee shops, or the beach, with no single default spot.

'The other thing that genuinely surprised me was discovering how central pubs are to everyday life,' Celeste said. 'Here, the pub is the go-to for a lot of occasions: after-work drinks, Sunday lunch with family, or catching up with friends.' She described the tradition as cosy, particularly enjoying weekly Sunday roasts and the community atmosphere in village pubs where everyone knows each other.

Celeste contrasted this with California, where breweries might be the closest equivalent, but nothing quite matches the pervasive social role of British pubs. Her video has since attracted numerous likes and comments, with viewers sharing their own experiences and nostalgia for English customs.
