Abandoned UK theme park Oakwood reclaimed by nature after closure

Oakwood Theme Park in Pembrokeshire, which closed permanently in March 2025, is slowly being overtaken by vegetation as nature reclaims the rides. The park, which delighted visitors for nearly four decades, shut its gates after bosses cited "unrelenting economic challenges."

A Beloved Destination Since 1987

Opened on April 14, 1987, the park featured a narrow-gauge railway, go-karting, water slides, and a bobsleigh. During the 1990s, it unveiled the Megafobia rollercoaster, built at a cost of approximately £1.7 million, followed by larger, more daring attractions that drew guests from across the UK.

In 2006, Speed: No Limits arrived, holding the title of the steepest rollercoaster in the UK at the time. After the park's closure, it was moved to Walygator Sud-Ouest amusement park in Agen, France.

Nature Takes Over and Rides Find New Homes

More than a year after the closure, some attractions remain standing in fragments or have yet to be demolished. Others, including Drenched, Treetops, the Pirate Ship, and Snake River Falls, have been granted a second chance elsewhere.

Oakwood remains under the control of Aspro Parks, a Spanish leisure conglomerate that owns 68 other parks across Europe. Aspro acquired the park from the McNarma family in 2008, who had established it in the 1980s to diversify their land holdings.

No Public Plans for the Site

Di Clements, county councillor for Pembrokeshire's Martletwy ward, noted that no plans have been made public for the site. He said: "Locally there has been little discussion and comment about the future of the old Oakwood site. No plans have been made public or any that I am aware of."

He added that while some rides have been removed, "there are still a number of structures prominent to the skyline," and suggested they should be removed if no future plans exist. He proposed an "all-weather attraction" for the region, while speculation suggests the site could be redeveloped to extend Bluestone National Park Resort, a nearby holiday destination.
