Historic 180-Year-Old Bolton Pub Faces Closure as Greene King Shakes Up Portfolio

An historic pub that has served its community for 180 years is facing possible closure, leaving locals devastated. The Red Lion in Over Hulton, on the outskirts of Bolton, is under threat after owners Greene King informed staff of a consultation over its future.

Wider Hospitality Shake-Up Announced

The hospitality giant has separately announced a major restructuring plan, with 150 sites to be sold off and approximately 20 others being closed down. This strategic move places The Red Lion, located on Salford Road, at risk of calling final orders by the end of April.

For generations, the pub has provided a cherished venue for locals to meet and create lasting memories, making its potential loss particularly poignant for the community.

Community Reaction and Fond Memories

News of the possible closure was shared on the local Facebook community page with an announcement reading: 'DEVASTATING NEWS! Our thoughts go to Clare, Lydia and all the team.'

Hundreds of former patrons paid their respects in the comments, sharing heartfelt memories of their time at the establishment.

Gary Williams wrote: 'I worked there in the late 80s, great place, fond memories.'

Derek Piper, who also worked a short stint there, recalled: 'Great times late 70s to late 80s... in the Red Lion was a good place to be... Also worked there in the restaurant when it first opened for a couple of years when Alan Crompton and his wife managed it... Hope it gets taken over.'

Many others echoed this hope that new owners might rescue the site, while some expressed fears it could be converted into a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).

Personal Connections and Community Impact

Kevin Bracegirdle noted he had visited the pub on Christmas Day and had hoped to continue the tradition this year, but now must make alternative plans.

Mike Stephenson remembered vibrant evenings: 'Great nights in the 70s, especially Sunday nights in the main room when we would gather around one little table in the middle and expand a circle around it as more people came in. Or often time just a couple of pints in there before heading off to the Palais or Maxwells Plum.'

Official Statement from Greene King

The Red Lion is part of the Hungry Horse chain, a subsidiary of Greene King. A spokesperson for Greene King stated: 'We can confirm that a consultation is underway at the Red Lion in Over Hulton as a potential closure is considered. Making the decision to close a pub is never an easy one and multiple factors are always considered before a final outcome is agreed. The team at the Red Lion has been notified, and our main focus is on supporting our team members at this time.'

This development highlights the ongoing challenges in the hospitality sector and the emotional impact on communities when longstanding local institutions face uncertain futures.
