Xbox has announced the arrival of four classic titles on PC in a move to introduce backward compatibility for original Xbox games. The four games are now available on PC and handheld, having all originally released before the Xbox 360 launched in late 2005.
Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge and Fuzion Frenzy are all now playable on PC and supported handheld devices. While each game can be purchased on PC, they are also included with all Xbox Game Pass subscription tiers.
Anyone that already owns the games doesn't need to pay twice, either; instead the digital licence carries over to their PC or handheld. And through Xbox Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming, these can be played on the Xbox console, cloud, PC and Xbox ROG Ally Devices.
Statement from Xbox Leadership
In a statement, Jason Ronald, VP of Next Generation at Xbox said: "Your library is more than just a collection of games. It is your personal history of epic stories and treasured memories from the past."
"And as players, we don’t want to leave our gaming legacy behind even as technology continues to evolve and advance. We expect our library of games to move forward with us and to be able to play them in entirely new ways."
Broader Preservation Effort
Microsoft and Xbox say the move marks the start of a "broader effort to preserve Xbox games from the past and bring them to PC over time". They've also pledged new features, such as 4x resolution scaling, VSync support and full-screen and windowed display modes.
Ronald also revealed that Xbox is bringing Achievements to select original Xbox games on both console and PC. The first four games will be updated to include achievements "in the coming months".
He added: "Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC is another step toward preserving the games from the past and making it easier for you to enjoy and play more of the games you already own across the devices you use every day."
Fan Reactions
After the news was confirmed, many fans on Reddit expressed their delight. One wrote: "Finally, some good f****** news! Can't wait to try them on my ROG Xbox Ally X!!"
A second added: "This is huge & could really drive home why Helix will be a different entry." Another replied: "I think if anything, that really does solidify that their next console will be a PC that can act like a console, similar to the ROG Ally."
Several expressed their delight at Crimson Skies arriving to PC and handheld, saying its multiplayer mode was "underrated" and "so much fun". Another added: "I would love to live the glory days of Conker and Crimson Skies online again."
The news also prompted fans to dream of the next titles coming via the scheme. One wrote: "Wow, they're actually doing it. Hopefully we get Fable 2 on PC one day." Another added: "Knights of the Old Republic is waiting for me. It's waiting for us all."
