Xabi Alonso is closing in on his second Chelsea signing after sanctioning a move for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder officially takes over at Stamford Bridge next month on a four-year deal, following the sacking of Liam Rosenior.
Alonso's role in Chelsea's summer recruitment
While Alonso is still waiting to take charge, he has been actively involved in Chelsea's summer recruitment. He played an integral role in the club's first signing, a £51m deal for Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra. Inter Milan were leading the race for the 21-year-old Italy international, but Chelsea hijacked the deal with Alonso's help in convincing Palestra to move to west London.
Lacroix keen on Chelsea move
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Alonso has also sanctioned Chelsea's move for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix. The 26-year-old France international has made 70 Premier League appearances over the past two seasons, helping Palace win the FA Cup and Conference League. Romano reports that Chelsea have opened talks with Palace, and Lacroix has indicated he is 'keen' to join the Blues.
Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, as Lacroix hopes to move to Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea must still agree a fee with their London rivals. French outlet RMC Sport reported earlier this month that Crystal Palace would want at least £35m for Lacroix and are under no pressure to sell. But Chelsea are confident of securing his signature given his desire to join and be part of Alonso's project.
Alonso, one of the best players of his generation and a highly-rated coach, is building a squad to improve on Chelsea's disappointing season. Bringing in proven Premier League talent like Lacroix is a key part of that plan.
