Max Verstappen's camp has held discussions with McLaren about a sensational move, according to reports, as a unique contract clause could allow the four-time world champion to leave Red Bull. The talks were initiated by Verstappen's representatives, not McLaren, Sky Sports News reported.
Verstappen Frustrated with Red Bull's 2026 Start
Verstappen, 28, has been left frustrated by Red Bull's disappointing start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren have outpaced the Austrian team in the Constructors' Championship. The Dutchman had previously flirted with leaving the sport altogether, unimpressed by major regulation changes introduced this campaign.
McLaren Meeting Confirmed by Reporter
Sky Sports reporter Craig Slater said: "There has been a meeting with his management and McLaren management, and it was instigated by Max's people. They are not doing that well this year, but Max knows they know how to build a winning car." McLaren dominated last season, with Lando Norris clinching his maiden Drivers' Championship title after fending off a late challenge from Verstappen.
Contract Clause Allows 2027 Exit
Verstappen can invoke a buy-out clause in his Red Bull contract, reportedly stipulating he could join another team in 2027 if he is outside the top two in the drivers' championship by the summer shutdown in August. Red Bull is fully aware of this potential exit route.
Manager Denies Deal, But Leaves Door Open
Verstappen's manager, Raymond Vermeulen, refuted claims of a deal in place. "Of course, there are release clauses, there always have been. But we've never exercised one," Vermeulen said. "We've always been loyal and we will remain so. We want to continue down the path with Red Bull and see Max finish his career here – but of course with the possibility of winning."
McLaren Boss Open to Verstappen, But Only If Drivers Leave
McLaren CEO Zak Brown opened the door to a future move but suggested it would require Norris or Oscar Piastri leaving first. "I'd be very surprised if Lando or Oscar went elsewhere, because they are very happy," Brown said. "If for some strange reason someone slipped on a banana peel getting out of the tub, then yeah of course, Max is a four-time world champion."
Red Bull Turmoil and Mercedes Interest
Red Bull has faced controversy, including a bitter row between former team principal Christian Horner and Verstappen's father Jos. Horner's exit and the hiring of Laurent Mekies as his replacement have done little to quell noise about Verstappen's future. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has long pursued Verstappen, meeting him on his yacht in Italy last season. However, Wolff's interest has cooled due to the rise of championship leader Kimi Antonelli alongside George Russell. Verstappen finished second behind Russell at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday and now trails Antonelli by 98 points in the standings after eight races.
