UK's Dragon's Back Hike: Stunning Views, Tough Climb

The Dragon's Back in the Peak District is a popular hiking route known for its stunning panoramic views of Derbyshire. However, it is also notoriously difficult, especially for those afraid of heights. This hike, which simulates the famous Dragon's Back trail in Hong Kong, encompasses the limestone peaks of Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill.

Route Details

The hike can take between two and three hours. Many people choose to tackle only one hill and call it a day. The full route involves climbing one hill, descending, crossing a valley, ascending the second hill, and returning. The start is in Hollinsclough village, where free parking is available along New Road. The path begins flat, but soon becomes a steep scramble over rugged rock.

Challenges and Tips

The author found the climb scary, especially in damp or windy weather. A dry, sunny day is recommended. Proper hiking footwear with good grip is essential; flat trainers are inadequate. For those with a genuine fear of heights, this hike may not be suitable. However, if you are determined, go at your own pace and consider hiking with an experienced partner.
