Manchester United have suffered a transfer setback as Christos Tzolis is on the verge of joining Arsenal, despite the forward previously expressing openness to a move to Old Trafford. The 24-year-old Club Brugge star, who scored 22 goals and provided 29 assists last season, is set to complete a £34 million move to north London.
Tzolis Nears Arsenal Move After Medical
Greek journalist Dimitris Manakos reported that Tzolis is expected to formally become an Arsenal player this week, with a medical scheduled for Tuesday. The Gunners are anticipated to announce the deal on Wednesday, according to the report.
Tzolis, a former Norwich City player, had hinted at interest in Manchester United during an interview with Het Nieuwsblad in May. "United could convince me," he said. "Such a massive club with so much history. It would be hard to say no to that." He added that he would only consider a move to a Champions League club from England, Germany, Spain, or Italy, or Paris Saint-Germain.
United's Busy Summer Transfer Window
Manchester United have already secured three new signings this summer: Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Karl Darlow. The club finished third in the Premier League last season, qualifying for the Champions League. Last summer, they strengthened their attack with Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha, who all played key roles in that success.
It remains to be seen whether United will pursue further forward signings after missing out on Tzolis. The club's revamped attacking options from a year ago may reduce the urgency for additional reinforcements.
